How to Build Your Own Bongsaber

Ever since seeing Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and the fictional movie-within, Bluntman and Chronic, I’ve wanted my own bongsaber.  One day when I couldn’t find any of my pipes, I looked at my lightsaber and thought “Why not?”  So I got out my tools and went to work, and it was surprisingly simple.

Pictures are at the bottom of the post.

Disclaimer: I take no responsibility for any broken lightsabers.  While the directions below should work with many — if not all — lightsabers, I make no guarantees.  By following the directions below you assume any and all inherent risks.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A plastic lightsaber: I started off with a Hasbro model. Theoretically, any plastic lightsaber should do so long as the switch can be removed.  There are various metal lightsaber hilts for sale out there, and these might well work — however they require a bigger investment and, as a result, you may find that they are more solidly constructed.
  • Waterproofing glue: Any “super” glue or plastic cement will do, so long as it says it is water or weather proof.  Also check to make sure that it works on plastic, as not all glues are suited to this.
  • Metal hitter piece: Mine came from an old acrylic bong which had long since been destroyed.  The slide/bowl and its rubber companion survived and were ideal for my creation.
  • Something to hold the hitter piece in place: Mine came with a rubber stopper which was perfect for filling up the gaps between the hitter and the lightsaber.
  • Screwdriver: You’ll need a screwdriver to remove the lightsaber casing.  The type of screwdriver needed will vary from model to model.  You’ll also need a flathead screwdriver to pry open the casing after you unscrew it.

Once you have everything you need, it’s time to sit down and get to work.

Step One: Remove all the screws from the lightsaber, and pry the casing apart.

Step Two: Remove all the guts from the lightsaber, as well as the blade.  Anything that is not part of the outer shell of the lightsaber should be removed.

Step Three: Remove the switch from the lightsaber if you have not done so already.  This may require additional pushing, pressing, or prying.

Step Four: Apply a layer of glue along the sides of the lightsaber.  In the place where the switch was, install the slide/bowl and whatever you’re using to hold it in place.  Press the lightsaber back together and put the screws back.  Add an extra layer of glue on the outside, along the seam of the lightsaber.  If you miss any spots, water will leak through.

Step Five: Enjoy!  Drop some ice cubes down the shaft of your new bong, put some water in it and pack a bowl of your favorite blend.  Be sure to wait long enough for the glue to dry, or you’ll wind up inhaling the wrong kind of fumes.

Not all glues will work and not all plastics can be easily glued.  Don’t worry if you can’t make it waterproof – you can still fill the chamber with ice and get a nice cool smoke out of your brand-new pipesaber.

  5. Nice!!!! I Like!!!

  6. I really wanted to make this, but as I grabbed my lightsaber, I noticed one fatal error… I had assumed that there were screws to take out…

The lightsaber I have is plastic, and all the seams have been heated and fused together.

and ideas on how to remedy this and get on with my bong-makings?

  7. Well, through much bending, puling, prying and cracking, I managed to get the bastard apart. It looks crappy, but hey, this is my first and I ran into some setbacks. My next one will be MUCH better now that I have the option of learning from my big mistake: MAKE SURE THE LIGHTSABER HAS SCREWS!

  8. Ouch! Good luck with the next run through!
